A Healthy Pastime - Gardening

Wednesday

When most people think of exercise, they think of things like jogging, aerobic dancing, weight lifting, or stationery cycling. Gardening is not usually even considered when it comes to exercise - but it should be. Gardening is a great form of healthy exercise, and it has the extra added bonus of being a productive undertaking. Instead of sitting on an exercise bike, pedaling and going nowhere, you are growing things!

When you garden, you are working several different muscle groups. In addition, you do repetitive tasks, such as hoeing or weeding, which if done consistently fully qualify as aerobic activity.

You may not be using some of the muscles in your daily work but they are exercised while gardening. You might have heard an old adage “muscles hurt that I didn’t even know I had”. This is true when you do gardening. It is important to exercise all the muscles of the body to keep fit and you can achieve this by gardening.

When you pay attention to the muscles you are using for different gardening activities, it helps you to get complete advantage of fitness through gardening. It is good if you emphasize on the movements. You can do the movements for longer, like if you are bending for planting then stay in that position for more time.

You can pick you as well as swing the hoe more than what you have been doing to help get more exercise. Do a different action every day and try to get the feel of every muscle that is being used for maximum benefit. Try to do some stretching prior to gardening so that there is no injury to the muscles. Gardening will help you feel as well as look better just after a few days.

Here Is Your Malaga City Overview

If you are planning a trip to the Costa Del Sol of Spain, it helps to know what you are going to see. Because Malaga is the capital of the Malaga province there, you will probably spend a lot of time there. Here is a helpful Malaga city overview for you to get the most out of your visit.

You will probably reach Malaga , Andalucia’s second largest city, by the airport. It is a very convenient gateway to the rest of Europe and many discount flights are available. It is easy to arrange for ground transportation to begin your stay.

One reason people like to visit Malaga is for its museums. By far, the most famous resident of Malaga was Pablo Picasso. You can see the home where this famous artist was born and a great museum devoted to his works.

If your artistic tastes run to the more traditional, you can visit two museums at Alcazaba Castle: There is an archeological museum where you can see ancient Greek and Gothic pieces and even a Roman theater. You can also visit the Museo de la Ceramica, which is devoted to ancient and modern pottery. Elsewhere in town are the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions and the city museum, both of which offer many hours of enjoyment.

In addition to museums, Malaga has many other interesting places to visit. Among these is the cathedral, which dominates the city as it stands on the former site of a mosque. Work on the cathedral began in 1528 and its south tower is not finished even today. Because work on the cathedral stopped and started again and again (largely due to war and to shortage of funds), you will enjoy seeing the mix of architectural styles in this beautiful structure.

All this culture is bound to make you hungry. You won’t lack for good food here: The region is renowned for its wine and its fresh seafood. Sample the delicious cuisine at any of a number of places, from small stands, to elegant restaurants and nightclubs. Why not visit the marketplace and create your own picnic lunch in this charming town? You can eat it while watching ships in the harbor.

There are many fun activities to enjoy here, from swimming to golf to hiking to biking. But what would a trip to Spain be without a bullfight? You can see this traditional sport right here in Malaga.

As you can see, there is so much to do in this corner of Spain, you might forget to just kick back and enjoy the beach. It would be a shame to miss it, but remember: You can always come back. Malaga and its delights will be waiting for you to return.

One way to add interest to your garden is by constructing a retaining wall. Behind this wall, you can plant a lawn or flower bed. Although building a retaining wall requires some planning and effort, they are actually not that difficult to build.

When planning your wall, make sure that it is strong enough to hold up the earth, but porous enough to allow for drainage. Many retaining walls are built from stone, held together with either dirt or cement between the stones.

In building your wall, be sure the base is sunk into the ground, ideally about 6 inches deep. Ideally, the width of the base should be at least a quarter of the wall’s height.

Every 24 inches or so, and about 6 inches from the lower ground level of the wall, you should install drainage pipes. If your wall is porous enough, you may not need these pipes. But, especially if you are using mortar to hold your wall together, drainage pipes are necessary.

If you are building a wall with soil between the stones, you may be able to start at the ground level, instead of sinking the wall into the soil, although it is better if you do start below the ground level. The easiest way to build your wall is to choose local stones, with larger ones for the main stones and smaller stones to fill in the holes. You should use smaller stones near the top of the wall. Try to make the side of the wall facing out as level as possible, ensuring an attractive appearance. Don’t use stones with round surfaces, as they will be hard to fit together into a structurally sound wall. No spaces should be left; they should be filled in with packed dirt or smaller stones.

When building the overall wall, make sure it slopes back slightly against the soil it is retaining. This will help give you wall strength. You can slope it as much as 5 or 6 inches back for every foot of height, although you do not need to slope it this much.

Once you have built your retaining wall, you can also use it as a wall garden. You can plant smaller plants in the soil between the stones. You can also plant flowers with strong roots, which will also help keep your wall strong as well as adding color. There are many different varieties of flowering plants which would be suitable for your wall.

If you are building a mortared or concrete wall, the construction will be somewhat simpler, as the mortar forms a tighter bond. You should mix 1 part Portland cement and 2 parts sand, coating the top of each stone to add the next layer. The areas between large stones can be filled with smaller stones. Mortared walls are much more permanent than those built with earth.

Concrete walls are even stronger than those built with mortar. However, you need to build forms for the concrete, which can be complicated. Concrete walls can be thinner than rock walls, especially if the concrete is reinforced when building landscape river walls.

No matter which method you choose, the top of your wall needs to be protected. You can use broad, flat stones on the top of your wall. Slate makes an excellent choice for this.

A great affordable addition to any apartment or home are posters. The wide variety and number for sale is astonishing. Due to them being so cheap to purchase when compared to purchasing real artwork, the posters can be rotated often so you do not get tired of looking at the same thing.

There are many types of posters including historic posters like Aztec posters, artist posters, sports posters like Tiger Woods posters, panoramic posters, and movie posters like Scarface posters.

The range in price for posters is anywhere from a few dollars up to fifty to one hundred dollars for limited edition artist or photography prints. This is still a good bargain as opposed to buying the artwork itself.

Landscapes are a favorite for many people. Breathtaking views can be added to your home. If you have been to that place, everyday the poster will remind you of the great trip that you went on. Further trips to new places might also be inspired by looking at posters.

A good poster needs to have a balanced design. Putting to much emphasis on one side will draw your eye away from the rest of the poster. This is something to consider when purchasing a poster.

You should always go with your first impression for which poster you like best. The things we are first drawn to always are what end up purchasing. Much time can be saved when using this method.

Posters are needed to do more than just fill up space. Care should be taken picking out something that will not just be ignored. With the wide variety in the market, there is sure to be something that will be perfect for your wall.

Also, often not thought of is that posters can make great gifts as well. You can find one in any area of interest. Then the recipient has a well tailored gift just to suit their favorite activities or places.

The Use Of Rocks In Landscaping

Tuesday
Nov 18,2008
by Kent Higgins

Landscaping rocks come in all shapes, sizes and colors and are a great “new” idea to allow your personality to show through in the design of your garden. Whilst rocks have been used for landscaping for many years, their use has been reinvented in particular with river rocks. You may choose to use natural rocks or artificial rocks in that “perfect” shape, but where can you find them?

Where to Find Landscape Rocks

If you live in an area that has rocks occurring naturally, you may well find just what you need and save yourself a great deal of expense. If you are not so lucky, there are plenty of garden stores or landscaping companies that will have just what you are looking for. You can even go online and search for artificial rocks that can be personalized to suit your needs. But wherever you purchase your rocks, you should consider the following things.

What You Need to Know When Buying Landscaping Rock

What job will the rock have to do? Some rocks are not suitable for certain jobs, so do your homework to make sure that you choose the right type of rock. This applies if you are doing the work yourself or if you are getting a professional landscaper.

Landscaping Rock Garden Ideas

Landscape rocks can be used in a number of ways for different areas in your garden design. They can be used to construct walls, paths, decorative columns, the foundations for other structures and as focal points. There is a rock to suit just about any role in your garden.

Rocks used as accents or focal points will give your garden design a great deal of character and will add dimension to the garden. Accent rocks can be used as a border around garden beds, a swimming pool or a pond.

Using rocks to construct a retaining wall will give the dual benefits of providing strength to a structure as well as a beautiful appearance. A “rock garden”, with small plantings nestled between the rocks will provide an original and naturalistic look to your garden. By far the style now is the use of river rocks in landscaping.

Tips for River Rock Landscaping

River rocks can be used to create stepping stones, construct a retaining wall or just to add interest to certain areas of your garden or to your backyard landscaping design. They can even be used as weed suppression in your flower beds. Water is not necessary with river rocks to create the desired effect.

For people with small children, water can be a safety concern, so using river rock to create a dry river bed bordered by ornamental grasses and flowers is an effective alternative. Blue and greens in the grasses add interest in the form of color.

Whatever you decide regarding your landscape design, you will be able to find a landscaping rock to fit your needs.

Do I need a Rug and Floor Tool? No maybe a Powerhead? Turbohead? Does this sound like you when you are trying to purchase a Miele vacuum cleaner? There are many different attachments available for Miele vacuum cleaners, but many people are unaware of the attachment that is ideal for their household. There is a Rug and Floor Tool, a Powerhead, a Bare Floor Brush and a Turbohead. All of these attachments perform differently and made for specific households. I will go through some questions and answers that commonly arise when talking about Miele attachments.

Many families require the power of an electric motor in their floor tool in order to effectively clean their rugs and carpets. A Miele powerhead uses a motor and belt to rotate a roller that has bristles on it to release the dirt in your carpets. A nice feature found on Miele powerheads is electronic overload. This feature prevents the user from overheating and breaking the motor and/or belt, by shutting down the motor if anything ever gets caught in the brushroll.

There are 2 Miele Powerheads available on the market today. There is one powerhead that is small and lightweight to get around and that is called the Miele’s Midsized Powerhead. The Midsized powerhead is great for medium-sized to short-sized pile carpeting with little to a fair amount of pet hair. The Mid-sized powerhead has all-rubber wheels so you can transition from carpeting to bare floors without harming your floors. Miele also makes a large-sized powerhead, which is meant for a house with high-sized to medium-sized carpeting with high traffic areas and large amounts of pet hair. The large-sized powerhead also has rubber wheels for hard floor cleaning.

What is a Miele Turbohead? A Turbohead is like a powerhead however there is no electricity driving a motor to make the brushroll spin. The suction actually causes a set of turbines to spin, which also causes the brushroll to spin. The result is a spinning brushroll that works off pure mechanics, no electricity!

A Turbohead may spin the brushroll at a high velocity like a powerhead, but that does not mean it cleans as well. The Turbohead does not require electricity and has no motor so does not perform as well as a powerhead on medium or high pile carpeting. This piece is good, however, for low-cut rugs and carpeting with minimal pet hair.

Unlike a powerhead or Turbohead, another head called a Rug and Floor Tool, has no rotating brushroll. That means that the Rug and Floor Tool uses only the suction of the machine to pick up dirt and does not use brushes to agitate the dirt. This Head is light because there is no motor in it, like the Turbohead.

If your house is comprised of area rugs and mainly hard surfaces, such as wood, the Rug and Floor is right for you. The Rug and Floor Tool is not good for somebody with wall-to-wall carpeting or a lot of pet hair, because the Rug and Floor Tool lacks spinning brushes agitate the carpeting.

Miele also makes a bare floor brush, known as the Parquet Floor Brush, which has only gentle bristles on the bottom protect your bare floors from harm. This Parquet Brush also has a knuckle that is capable of twisting all around to get under and around chair legs and furniture.

If your home consists of only bare floors then this is the piece for your. This piece is used exclusively on the bare floors and does a wonderful job picking up dirt and debris on your floors. The way the piece swivels will leave you in amazement every time you use it.

There are a lot of different heads available from Miele today. Regardless of how floors and carpets are situated throughout your house; Miele has the right tool for you.

For those starting out, gardening lawn care is important. Find the best information available for maintaining your yard.

Quite a bit of information regarding gardening lawn care is available to you, and you need it all. There are some aspects that you really need to know how to handle properly including proper methods to mowing your lawn, removing pests and adding fertilizers. These are just the start of the information you need, but highly important.

Proper Mowing

In gardening lawn care, mowing is one of the most important aspects of lawn care. There are several things to pay attention to in particular to get the results you want. First, mow your lawn in different directions with each mow rather than mowing along the same pattern every time. Doing this will allow you to see benefits in cutting off more of each weed leaf. Any leaf that may be leaning in one direction is still cut. This keeps them out of the competition with your grass.

Keep the clippings on the lawn. This gives several advantages including the fact that during a dry season, they add moisture to your lawn. This is because grass clippings are composed of 85 percent of water. They are also full of nutrients that the soil need to remain healthy for the grass you want to grow there.

Proper Watering

Regular watering of your lawn is important to gardening lawn care. Most know this but you also have to look at drainage of that water. For example, if you live in an elevated area, you need to add more because water run down will be substantial. You may want to consider adding an irrigation system to your lawn so that the area is regularly watered well.

Handling Pests

Perhaps one of the worst things working against you in gardening lawn care is the pest. The best thing for this is to have a dense turf to protect from the invasion. This will also keep out weeds. Fix any problems with your lawn when you notice them so that they are handled before becoming larger problems.

Fertilizing Properly

Finally, an important part of gardening lawn care is providing your lawn with the nutrients it needs to remain healthy. To do this, add fertilizer correctly. Remember that fertilizer should only be added when the soil has dropped below the necessary nutrient level for maintaining healthy grass. Sometimes all you need to do is to add compost to your lawn to give it the necessary nutrients it needs. Gardening lawn care requires a bit of attention to these details!

Solar And Wind Power Generation

Tuesday
Nov 18,2008
by Adrian Fletcher

Solar and wind power for the home are among the most widely used types of alternative energy. When combined they create an environmentally friendly, continuous alternative energy system that can be used to power your home. This system can also be hooked up to the grid so that any excess energy that is needed can be supplied by your utility company. This is a good backup plan should there be no wind or the weather is particularly inclement.

A solar power system supplies electricity that is generated directly from the sun’s rays. Solar panels which are lined with a semiconductor that generates electricity when the sun’s rays strike it are installed using either a roof, ground or pole mount. These mounts are often equipped with motors that allow the panels to be tilted throughout the day to follow the path of the sun.

The electricity generated through a solar panel is passed to a regulator/controller and then onto an inverter. the inverter converts the direct current to alternate current (AC). This is done because most homes run on AC. Once it is converted it can go into the home and used to power all your appliances and facilities. If it is not converted it can be stored in batteries as direct current.

Electricity follows the same basic path in a wind power system with the exception of the generation portion which takes place in the body of the turbine, which most of us consider the “giant fan” which spins away at the top of the enormous towers they are sometimes mounted on.

For a wind power system, the wind first turns the blades of a wind turbine. The turbine is connected by a shaft to a generator and as the shaft turns, electricity is generated. The electricity is then sent directly to the electrical system and can augment or substitute any solar power system you may have, or can be stored.

With wind power, the most significant cost is the wind turbine. Still, the turbine will be more inexpensive than the total solar equipment you’ll be required to purchase. The downside is that the turbine must be located in a spot far off the ground, usually needing to be mounted on top of a tower of some sort which can be expensive. The installation of solar power will probably require zoning authorization from the municipality and significantly more planning.

When you connect a solar power system with a wind power system, each part can operate in tandem to compensate and complement each other. Wind power can be produced at any time while solar has its natural limits based on the hours that the sun shines and bad weather. Conversely bad weather for a solar system maybe good weather for a wind generator. Both these systems can be built quite cheaply depending on the amount of power you want to create. Some guide suggests this figure could be as low as $400. However a professionally designed and installed system would cost much more than this.
